As an artist originally from the D.R. residing and working in West Harlem - I'm exploring the connection between The Hispanic Caribbean culture / migration and West Harlem and how that direct connection is reflected in West Harlem's fabric and every day life. The influx of people from the Antillas Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic that left the Caribbean Sea behind only to find the Hudson River here in West Harlem and brought along with them their culture, language, music, art, colors, rhythms, cuisine, stories and dreams - Creating a beautiful, rich and unique cultural landscape which is the one I explore in my painting: The richness of faces, racial mix, color, and movement of shapes which dance to merengue, salsa y cha-cha! A painting to celebrate the collective dream of immigrantes and the unique force of the joy, connectedness and sabor that make West Harlem Caribe!
