Barbara Anderson
I live on the Upper West Side, and I was a middle school teacher in an international school when I thought of the idea of Art on the Ave. I taught English and History, so narratives, voice and perspective are my thing. Art can tell a powerful tale, and this project is all about spotlighting artists with different perspectives and stories to share.
The reason I wanted Art on the Ave to happen was because, though it’s been a difficult time, an outdoor gallery walk is a great way to learn about, talk about and think about others.

I was a high school social studies teacher and I now work for an art museum in addition to my work with Art on the Ave. In my roles, I strive to activate my community and work to open people’s eyes. I am inspired by the prospect of Art on the Ave and its potential to spread stories that would otherwise go unheard.
Art has the ability to transmit emotion in a way that other mediums do not. I hope that the pieces we showcase throughout this project will be a representation of the struggles of this and past years, and a symbol of hope for the future.
