Artist Statement:
“Nevertheless, she persisted.”
Or should I say, we persisted? The last 18 months were very hard for all of us. So many lost so much. Mentally. Emotionally. Physically. Even communally. Vacant store fronts because so many businesses closed. The streets were empty. The blank stare from someone coming towards you, their face masked so there was no way to share the usual smile … say hello … how are you? We distanced ourselves from each other because we had to. First we had fist bumps. Then elbow bumps. Then just a wave if you could even recognize the person approaching. Hugs disappeared. Touching was frowned on. Gatherings ceased to exist. We became shut-ins. But we persisted. We did what we had to in order to survive. In order for our families and friends to survive. In order for our community to survive. And we are coming back.
Out of the ashes tulips will grow. We will linger to smell the flowers again. And we will hug our families and friends and morn those who have been lost.
We will begin to travel again. Renew our friendships. Share experiences once more. We will have the adventures that create the postcards we’ll send back to loved ones.
We will again enjoy smatterings of conversations overheard. We will chuckle at the whimsy of life. We will start strolling through our parks like never before.
New York City will bounce back. Because we persisted. We are New Yorkers.
