There was a time when anti-literacy laws made it illegal for enslaved and free people of color to read and write because of the fear that black literacy would prove to be a threat to the slave system and incite rebellion and insurrection. A basic such as reading in everyday modern life is part of our Journey. Reading and writing are Fundamental rights and I hope this piece will serve as a reminder that there was a time when it was denied.
