Artist Statement:
The process of making this wall sculpture series is in two steps. The first step is welding steel to create a form, and during this process, I work intuitively and focus on visualizing the image in my mind of what the piece would be. And the second step is applying textures and planes with fabric and paper over the steel. This process requires a lot of intentional control because once I put them, I can't go back to welding that would burn them. Sometimes, I am frustrated because I can't change what I did, and I have to find a solution. These two processes and materials seem disruptive and not coherent, but for me, there are moments when those conflicting elements intersect perfectly, and that's what I am inspired by.
The interpretation of my work is up to the viewers. We have diverse opinions and perspectives but trying to find what intersects between them is truly valuable I believe. That's why looking at an artwork and trying to understand it or find some way to react to it is also meaningful, because you are trying to find a way to communicate with an unknown person's idea and expression.
I hope my work as a part of this exhibition can inspire conversations that intersect between artists, artwork, and viewers.
