Wilhelmina Grant Cooper

What a Hoot

Found Object Assemblage

16 x 20

$800

Wilhelmina Grant-Cooper is a self-taught artist who creates assemblages using found objects. As an advocate for waste reduction, Wilhelmina believes that items that are no longer desirable or functional can take on new meanings through art! Her re-evaluation of the life cycle of everyday items in a throwaway society results in an artistic transformation of obsolete, rusty, or broken objects. The source of materials includes thrift stores, garage sales, flea markets, dumpsters, and construction sites. The upcycling of found objects through visual art rather than adding these items to the landfill is her contribution toward helping to protect the environment. The items in this piece were discarded from Harlem brownstones (or other buildings) undergoing renovation.
