To express West Harlem visually is to depict the people in it. Highlighting the vibrant and diverse community within Harlem, “Chrome” serves as a representation of different facets of this community’s spirit. “Chrome” embodies the bold, rebellious energy I’ve come to know throughout my life in this neighborhood. Graffiti, a prominent form of self expression within Harlem, is mirrored in his punk-inspired appearance. Similarly, his skin, adorned in bright, sharp contrasts, embodies the essence of Harlem’s street art and artists. To me, this is the essence of action, audacity and energy, driving our community forward. This piece honors both the collective and individual, offering a nuanced representation of Blackness that defines this community. It aims to resonate with viewers, affirming that it is the people who are, indeed, the art living within West Harlem.
