Black Joy is Timeless

Fabric & Braiding Hair

15 x 30

$3000

Art lives within us; we just need a medium and a platform. In West Harlem, art is not confined to galleries or studios—it breathes in the streets, homes, and community spaces, thriving in the very fabric of our daily lives. Here, every corner holds the potential for creativity, and every material offers the promise of transformation.

My artistic journey began with acrylic and oil paint, but recently, I have ventured into the realm of fiber arts. Incorporating collected fabric and braiding hair, I create collages that depict vibrant, textured figures focused on intimacy and the purity of black joy. As a low-income student, I am committed to sustainable art, using materials accessible to me rather than spending money on new supplies. I find immense satisfaction in transforming these materials, as there is so much waste and countless ways to reuse it creatively.

Textures captivate me because of their interactive nature. When art feels too flat, I feel disconnected from my audience. I want those who see my work to feel compelled to touch the images, creating a more intimate experience. The process of finding and repurposing materials is like solving an endless puzzle, and I believe it adds a unique depth and connection to my art.

Through my work, I aim to capture the essence of black joy and highlight the beauty of everyday moments, encouraging a deeper appreciation for sustainability and the richness of reused materials.
