I moved alone to West Harlem eight years ago to reinvent myself as an individual, an artist, and a spiritual mentor. I was drawn viscerally to the place… the low rumbling energy, the lovely brownstones, the noise, colors, and textures of the streets, the rawness, the realness, the kindness and camaraderie, the ugly and the edgy...and our community's remarkable spectrum of human colors, cultures, languages, and diversity that lets us experience a slice of the whole wide world. A multitude of creators of all shapes, sizes and sorts abide and express themselves in West Harlem. My artistic spark was stirred and reignited by the passion passing flame-to-flame among them. That "West Harlem is where art lives" is an obvious and irrefutable fact. But beyond that... West Harlem IS ART, fundamentally and foundationally. And I find creative inspiration in my neighborhood every single day, just by opening my eyes and taking two steps out the door.
