As a proud native Brooklynite still living in my childhood brownstone, I am deeply committed to celebrating stoop culture, and using it to connect neighbors throughout Brooklyn and beyond. During the COVID lockdown, my stoop was my refuge and muse, sparking the creation of Stoop Stories, a documentary storytelling collective that connects and celebrates NYC neighbors through the power of stoop life and storytelling. Stoops have always brought New Yorkers together, but in recent years, as neighborhoods gentrify, stoop life has eroded. Americans are facing a public health crisis of loneliness, isolation, and disconnection, and it is particularly acute among youth and elders. Our mission is to bring generations together for healing, compassion, support, and belonging. My submission focuses on one dynamic portrait depicting cross-generational connection between Tiffany and her son, flanking a framed portrait of her late aunt Catherine, on the stoop of their 3rd generation Bed-Stuy brownstone. The lighting in this image connotes warmth and love for family, Brooklyn and stoops. When we visited Tiffany and Jordan, their stoop became a safe space for authentic, vulnerable connection, as we bonded and laughed for hours. Tiffany shared, “Stoop life is everything. I played dolls here growing up. I was on this stoop when 9/11 happened. It's like sacred ground. Everyone in my family that has lived in this house is now deceased, but there are so many memories. My aunt was a pillar in this community. Everything about who I am today is because of my aunt.”
