Aleathea Sapp-Jimenez

The vivid colors tell the story of Ms. Aleathea Sapp-Jimenez’ interpretation of the texture that is Brooklyn, from Park Slope through Bedford-Stuyversant. These paintings are a tour of local culture, talent and energy. The energy of the people makes the community alive, like the flowers in the painting remind us of change. It is representative of the experiences you can have, as well as the love of the neighborhood in which these subjects exist. They may dance, they may read or they watch for their kids as they play outside.

Sapp-Jimenez’ B-girls can teach you about the pavement beneath them. If you close your eyes, you will recall dancing for a visitor, with a “do that dance you showed me” request by an elder. Upside down being the perspective of the viewer, with the admiration of their block behind them. The casual comfort of coming home to get your hair braided by your grandma while you sit on the floor, head down tracing the carpet eavesdropping on “grown-folks conversation.”

You grew older and started spending time with your cousins playing cards on the steps while the young ones flew by on their scooters, never out of sight. This fits the theme of “Spread love the Brooklyn way,” as you can look at these paintings and know where you are and be transported to a shared memory. You can almost recall running home, to beat the street lights turning on above you.
