In the summer of 2020 citizens and artists inspired by the Black Lives Matter Movement took to the streets in cities around the world to protest police brutality, the murder of George Floyd, and systemic racism. As a photographer, I wanted to capture this moment in time on the streets of New York City in particular in upscale retail shops storefront windows in Manhattan as well as construction sites in Brooklyn.
Both the retail shop windows and the construction fences were protected by plywood boards, and many local artists came out to paint these boards with art in support of Black Lives Matter. The art was beautiful and provocative. It made people in city government, business owners, and the public consider the consequences of police brutality and racism towards African Americans. Most of this art has since been removed from public view, destroyed, or lost. My photographs have become a documentation and a record of this work that was undertaken in New York City during a time that some historians have called, “The Summer of Reckoning.”
