The Journey of The Mask is one from reverence to revolution. In Western Africa masks were used to commune with the divine in ritual along with sound and movement. As we journeyed across the Atlantic those masks became metaphysical. We, the descendants of enslaved Africans are living proof of the dexterity of those masks; the integrity and strength of our ancestors. They made it through those “Bloody Seas” only to face a new hell. Masks on.They learned to survive in a New World under hellish conditions. Traditions were masked and conserved through oral histories, music, and religion. The industrial revolution brought the end of chattel slavery. African Americans developed new masks as they began to integrate into society as second rate citizens. WEB DuBois called this mask double consciousness. In 2021 I was privileged to visit the home of WEB DuBois in Ghana. It was a trip that felt like a return to source. “Ouroboros Scarab”, a full circle moment. But even in Ghana I could sense the tremors of white superiority under the guise of capitalism in a nation wrestling with colonialism. The Journey for African Americans and the larger African diaspora is ever evolving. It is a cacophony of individual journeys colliding into a movement. My work resembles these masks. Each piece is a tool created in ritual to insight communion with community, self and the divine. It is a space to confront our journeys, embrace our shadows, and become inspired to create new paths.
