Elizabeth Menzie

Black and white photographs allow me to turn off the noise, quiet the ‘room’. To remove distractions without removing the message.

My photographic work is an effort to freeze moments in time experienced by African people and the African diaspora. It sets out to enlighten those in different communities and cultures while emboldening those who identify as Black.

In this selection, I highlight the pride that is strong within the Black individual and the Black community. My work forces you to see the beauty in a Black man. To see the softness in a Black woman. To understand how strong the love, pride, and passion is when we are in loving unity with each other.

I want my love and adoration for the Black community, my community, to emanate from my work. For my viewers to feel the care and intent behind each of my images. A care and intent that comes from understanding that majority of the world prefers not see people who look like my subjects.

My work demands that you see us. Feel us. Hear us. Made possible by removing the distractions without ever removing the message.
