Artist as Critic

Artists often use their work to convey a message about the society that they live in. They use symbolism, imagery, and emotion to make a comment on their world. Look at “A New Day” by Sage Gallon. Think about how he uses these things to convey a message. What is he trying to say?

What would you focus on if you were an artist making a critique on society? What subjects would be effective in your school or community? What message would you want to communicate?

Identify an issue that you consider important to your community, and create a list of items you would include in your piece of art and why you have chosen it. Think about things such as people, nature, objects, symbols, and actions.
