The Bright Days are Here

For over a decade I’ve been photographing the Harlem neighborhood I grew up in. What were the stone cold streets of 116th street and 8th avenue are now a different world than the one I came from. What remains are memories; ashes! Of what gentrification left as it ravaged through like a wild fire. What a time to have grown up with so much police hostility, poverty and then to see the place I call home, change. For many years I was the invisible man with a camera. I would blend in and see how everything changed so fast. Everything changes and expands similar to the mind but still! I miss what was of my life and my home. Everything I see is a projection of my mind and what I photograph is ultimately a reflection of myself. This image is an ode, with love, to my home Harlem, NYC, to Black and Brown people, and inspired by my nostalgia; of my home long gone that I try to recreate through images, as I observe the world around me. It’s spiritually uplifting to have the opportunity to express how I see and capture light.
