Josefina Hernandez

My papercut works are an exploration of fleeting and seemingly mundane moments, hinting at an unnoticed beauty that lies latent within them. Largely inspired by nature’s sinuous and organic forms, my work explores the relationship between us and the spaces we inhabit.

An important element in my work is the use of positive and negative space and its interaction with light and shadow. The finished pieces are in conversation with light creating impermanent etchings on the walls as the light shifts through the day.

My papercut works possess an ethereal quality, achieved through precise ‘carving’ with an x-acto knife. As such, my process embodies the time, energy and physical effort of working with my hands. The meticulous cutting of paper is a meditative process for me as I am able to connect with my inner sensibilities and envelop myself in the creative act.

The works I am submitting relate to the theme of "the Rise" in the sense of growth and upward movement. They deal with seeds that are planted and whether tended to or not, thrive despite the odds. Exploring the theme that life always finds a way.
