Artist Statement
In my work, I always seek to merge the truth of life with a surface. Imperfect and primal, abstraction with purpose, color and texture in a primitive and earnest push of a brush. The greatest hope is that my work translates as approachable and real. I am reaching out from the surface in attempt to connect with other humans. We are constantly bombarded visually and I hope to infuse my work with a way of engaging the viewer that is both evocatively silent and powerfully connected. The artists I have been most influenced by are quite diverse: Edward Hopper, Thomas Hart Benton, Frieda Kahlo, Emily Carr and Leonora Carrington. Their paintings share both a profound connection between a person and a place. A reverence for the individual with the power and the wisdom to explore those themes that seep into us and remain like a treasured memory. A Woman’s strength, resilience and sensuality, together with the immediacy of a moment in New York City. An almost shocking clarity in my paintings is the balance of simplicity and totality.
