Artist Statement

Joanne Agabs’ scenery quickly gives away her love for her city and the demonstrates the resiliency New York has displayed throughout the pandemic. Balanced in harmonious painterly effect, Agabs plays with her chosen medium of watercolor paint to express a deep intimacy shared amongst the denizens of her native New York City. The candid persons of her paintings and drawings, captured in relief, attest to a New York in its dynamism and constant shifting as Agabs strives to capture fleeting moments, usually quotidien but always somehow both compelling and imperative in nature. The precision and detail with which her pieces are carefully constructed give Agab’s work delicate atmosphere from tree-lined avenues to colorful street vendors and beyond in her love letter to New York.
