Sally Rifkin
Hailing from Boston, St. Louis, Washington D.C., Detroit, and Brooklyn (in that order), Sally is constantly searching for places that feel like home within unfamiliar environments. Through her work, she explores how places take on meaning through memory, nostalgia, identity, and experiences, seeking to answer the question: how do we create the communities we want without repeating the mistakes of the past? Primarily using books, maps, atlases, and magazines, Sally creates collages, paper paintings, and objects depicting landscapes real and imagined. Her pieces contain elements of the unexpected – whether an unusual contrast or a playful title, her work seeks to highlight disjunctures and suggest unexpected affinities. By bringing forgotten materials back to life, Sally’s work asks audiences to question their relationships with material and the spaces they occupy, and dream about more equitable, beautiful futures.
