Julie Jean Mary

When I created the pieces, Manmi and Dancing with Joy, I was in a state of flow. The works are inspired by my Haitian background. I wanted my work to show vibrancy and a true love for what Haitian culture is all about. The Haitian people are resilient and strong. The people take care of their own no matter the hardships but they do it with love and joy as well. The process of both of these paintings was in the moment. I took out my canvases early in the morning and I decided to layer on different materials whether it be paint or collaging paper bags and writing. Out of the foreground of many layers were these paintings and figures born. I used ink to flush out the features of both women. Out of the background they were made to stand out. The woman in Dancing with Joy, is posed with elegance as she smiles and lifts her hands. She is dancing and beaming with joy as her locs dance around her. These works were born out of my love for my culture, as well as creating. I scratched the surfaces and layered on more colors. I played, explored, and discovered while making. The process of flowing through these brought peace and joy to me as well. A dance between my mind and paintbrushes is what these became.
