King Yan “Fina” Yeung
Artist Statement:
My work expresses urban chaos and harmony and its connection between the feeling of belonging and isolation. Drawing from my experience as an immigrant living in New York City, my work enters our deep emotions evoked in displacement, our shared experiences, and feelings of isolation, yet still with the hope to connect as a community. I work with recycled cardboard and natural materials. I have created several painting cardboard installations that capture the sense of home from immigrants’ points of view and raise awareness of homelessness in urban spaces. With its multilayered construction, cardboard is well-suited for revealing a city’s multiple strata. The texture of the multilayered construction of cardboard has become part of my painting, highlighting the deep texture of a city. Exposing the unpainted raw surface of cardboard, I portray the vulnerability of a city, our environment, and the identity of home.
