Kadiatou Coulibaly
Artist Statement:
My art practice is centered around a concept I call Denbaw Gaari which means “mothers thread” in Bambara and explores maternal relationships. Living in Brooklyn as a Black Malian woman expands my genetic memory linked to the fact that my paternal grandmother handmade bogolan (mudcloth).
Tantie Oumou represents an African aunty who is cheerful and caring. I created this piece while going through a set of positive and difficult life changes. During that transition, I thought about my aunt Oumou who was always smiling and teasing. This piece embodies my Denbaw Gaari concept to the fullest and touches on the notion that it takes a village to raise a child.
Sabali means patience in Bambara. This painting represents an African mother who is loving and comforting but can be firm and tough when needed. Both bogolan fabrics included in this painting come directly from Mali and were gifted by my mother.
