Verleen Armstrong
By definition, to be resilient means to be able to withstand and/or recover from very difficult situations, quickly. To me, resilience means to persevere through difficult situations without breaking. Moving with love in your heart because nothing ever comes of, or grows in bitterness and a cold heart. Resilience means to persevere while giving yourself grace for trying in a world where everyone looks at you as an enemy or threat even if its your neighbor. My work gives an abstract representation of how black people can rely on community to feel safe, to grow as a people, to know that they are not alone in the many battles we share and to resonate with people in different moments of their journey. It is a reminder to black people that we are not alone in a journey that makes us feel alone. The color choices are made to be therapeutic to the viewer’s eye and subconsciously healing to the viewer’s heart.
