Artist Statement
My work constantly reflects the manner with which I experience the world as a visual artist, as well as a choreographer. I initially practiced both art and dance in separate spheres but now I embrace the intersection and duality of my outlets; letting music play the central part of my creation process in both disciplines. Through dance, I utilize formations to achieve a particular visual composition, or abstract the color of emotion in a song to inspire movement. Likewise, through painting, I translate music and choreography onto a two-dimensional surface by letting the rhythm, tempo, and the texture of instruments and vocals guide my brushstrokes and expression of tone and color. I enjoy exploring the physicality of painting and thinking of it as movement, and seek to create layered narratives, intersecting music with personal experiences and my cultural environment.
