“Creating Tomorrow”
CALL TO ARTISTS
DEADLINE MARCH 6, 2022
ART ON THE AVE NYC
*Application Form Below*
We are a public arts initiative dedicated to community activation and the elevation of underrepresented and emerging artists. We showcase artwork in vacant storefront windows, bringing art, community and commerce together.
UPCOMING THEME/SHOW TITLE - “CREATING TOMORROW”
Using the work of local New York City artists, we want to spark a conversation about the idea of “Creating Tomorrow.” The need to come together to imagine a better tomorrow is especially urgent today. It is up to the interpretation of the artist to decide how their work speaks to the theme.
Responsible/Sustainable Living revolves around four core pillars: the human experience, the economy, society, and the environment. It is defined by the United Nations as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations to meet their own needs.”
This topic opens up a myriad of possibilities, as well as materials, for the artist to explore. We welcome the inclusion of recycled materials and found objects, in addition to paintings, photography, multimedia, and collage. We look forward to seeing many different perspectives!
EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION
Art on the Ave NYC displays art in vacant storefronts in highly trafficked locations. Our exhibitions create a sense of neighborhood/community pride. The windows of empty storefronts are brightened by vibrant art installed on gallery walls, with professional lighting, branded signage and QR codes. The upcoming show will be located on the Upper West Side, with support from the Columbus Avenue Business Improvement District and Chase Bank.
ARTWORK TELLS A STORY
Artists might reflect on the idea of collective vigilance, environmental justice and climate change, transforming wasteful materials or giving a second life to found objects, and even other interpretations of what might need our protection, attention, and remembrance, whether personal or universal.
Submissions should reflect, in a literal or symbolic way, Art on the Ave’s values. Inclusivity, empathy, equity, growth, action, and activism are some of the key values that applicants can integrate. We look at artist statements closely to ensure that they reflect the exhibition theme.
THE UPPER WEST SIDE NEIGHBORHOOD
The Upper West Side radiates life. It is home to a community of individuals/families, small businesses, and long-time valued educational and cultural institutions. It is bordered by Riverside Park to the West and Central Park to the East. It is a “community in balance,” blending a vibrant, urban culture with an active, outdoor lifestyle. Columbus Avenue, in particular, hosts an array of shops, restaurants, and neighborhood events, from Lincoln Center to the American Museum of Natural History. The Columbus Avenue BID is dedicated to making Columbus Avenue and the Upper West Side a great place to live, work, shop, and do business. This work focuses on the beautification of public spaces; supplemental sanitation; public programming; and the promotion and marketing of the area's diverse business and cultural offerings.
